Plug-and-Play FAQ

Since April 17, 2025, plug-and-play devices may be connected in Flanders, provided they are approved by Synergrid. This is the sector organization of the network operators. The information below is only valid for Flanders; contact your network operator for other countries or regions.

  • The most important point when purchasing power strips or batteries is that the device is approved via Synergrid.
  • The P1 port of your digital meter may be used as an information source for smart controls, but according to Belgian legislation, it cannot serve a security function.
  • Make sure your device carries the CE marking, which shows that your device has been evaluated and complies with European standards regarding safety, health, and environmental protection.
  • If in doubt, consult an installer to check whether the circuit of the power strip where you plug in the installation can handle the load and whether it is safe to use your device.
  • Consult your Association of Co-Owners (VME, for apartment buildings), city or municipality to see if additional regulations apply. In some cases, they may impose restrictions on the use of plug-and-play devices.

Which plug-and-play devices are allowed and where can I find that information?

The devices must have a CE label and be approved by Synergrid. The approved plug-and-play devices can be found in this list on the Synergrid website. This specific plug-and-play list is updated weekly. The most current status can always be found in the general list with all inverters, which also includes fixed installations. In this list, you can find the plug-and-play devices by searching for 'Plug&play' in column 14 'Additional information'.

Do I have to register plug-and-play devices?

That depends:

  • Do you want to receive feed-in compensation for solar energy you feed into the grid with your plug-and-play device? And do you not yet have a fixed solar panel installation? Then you must register the plug-and-play device with Fluvius. Otherwise, you will not receive feed-in compensation.
  • Do you not yet have a digital meter? Then you must register the device with Fluvius within 30 days. Fluvius will then install a digital meter within 90 days.
  • Are the plug-and-play devices combined with a total inverter capacity of 800W or more? Then you must register the devices within 30 days.
  • Are the plug-and-play devices combined with a total inverter capacity less than 800W? And do you already have a digital meter? Then you do not need to register the devices. But in that case, you will not receive feed-in compensation for solar energy you feed into the grid. Unless you already have fixed solar panels and have signed a feed-in contract through that. If you still want to receive feed-in compensation, you must register the plug-and-play devices.

How do I register my plug-and-play devices?

You register the devices via Mijn Fluvius. The registration procedure depends on the type of device (solar panel, battery/storage system).

Why must plug-and-play devices be approved by Synergrid?

Approval is done by Synergrid, the sector organization of the network operators. This approval is necessary to guarantee that the devices work correctly and safely with the distribution network, including during electricity network failures.

Where does the electricity produced by the plug-and-play devices go?

Do your plug-and-play devices produce electricity? Then it is injected into your electrical internal installation. If the device's production is greater than your internal consumption, the surplus is injected into Fluvius's distribution network. Do you have a digital meter? And have you signed a feed-in contract with a supplier? Then you receive compensation for that injected electricity. To obtain a feed-in contract, you must register the plug-and-play device.

I do not yet have a digital meter. Is a plug-and-play device a problem?

No, but you must register the plug-and-play devices with Fluvius. Have you registered your plug-and-play devices? Then Fluvius will install a digital meter within 90 days.

I have a digital meter. Do I need to do anything extra if I have a plug-and-play device?

  • Do you want to receive a feed-in tariff for solar energy you feed into the grid with your plug-and-play device? And do you not yet have a fixed solar panel installation? Then you must register the plug-and-play device within 30 days at Fluvius. Otherwise, you will not receive a feed-in tariff.
  • Is it about plug-and-play devices with a combined total power of 800W or more? Then you must register the devices within 30 days .
  • Is it about plug-and-play devices with a combined total power less than 800W? Then you  do not need to register the devices but you will then not receive a feed-in tariff for solar energy you feed into the grid. Unless you already have fixed solar panels and have already concluded a feed-in contract this way. Do you still want to receive a feed-in tariff? Then you must register the plug-and-play devices.

Do I need to have my plug-and-play devices inspected?

No. According to the AREI (the General Regulations on Electrical Installations), the devices are considered a product. They are therefore not part of the (fixed) electrical installation. You do not need to have them inspected. For further questions about this, you can contact the FPS Economy.

Do I need an installer for my plug-and-play solar panel?

No. Is your plug-and-play device approved? Then you can use it yourself. You can check whether your device is approved via this list. This specific plug-and-play list is updated weekly. The most current status can always be found in the general list with all inverters, which also includes fixed installations. In this list, you can find the plug-and-play devices by searching for 'Plug&play' in column 14 'Additional information'. Do you have doubts about the connection or the safe cooperation with your internal installation? Then it is best to consult an installer.

Do I need an installer for my plug-and-play battery?

Do you have a plug-and-play battery and a solar panel installation? And do you inject electricity into the distribution grid? Then together you may not inject more than what your solar panel installation can inject into the distribution grid. To guarantee this, you must provide a measurement at the access point according to the regulations. This is the so-called ‘EnFluRi sensor’. You must install it at the main meter in the fuse box. You can consult an installer for this. The EnFluRi sensor communicates with the battery. The battery must also contain an automatic power control. In the list of approved devices, a combination of a battery with an EnFluRi sensor is always included for plug-and-play batteries. Both are approved together by Synergrid. This specific plug-and-play list is updated weekly. The most current status can always be found in the general list with all inverters, which also includes fixed installations. In this list, you can find the plug-and-play devices by searching for ‘Plug&play’ in column 14 ‘Additional information’.

Can I use the P1 port with plug-and-play devices?

For safety reasons, you may not use the P1 port for a security function of the plug-and-play device, such as for limiting injection. You can use the P1 port of your digital meter for the smart control of plug-and-play devices.
