What makes BYD batteries special? Their compatibility. The HVS and HVM batteries can be used with various inverter brands, which is not the case with many manufacturers. This also makes these batteries an excellent retrofit option for customers with an existing PV system.
BYD has chosen to develop a High Voltage Small (HVS), a High Voltage Medium (HVM), and a High Voltage Large (HVL) battery, covering the full range of system sizes. The batteries are suitable for residential and commercial use and modularly expandable. It is important to know that the HVS and HVM modules are not interchangeable.
The battery modules of the HVS and HVM battery look identical but differ in the maximum number of stackable batteries per tower. The right model depends on your customer's needs. Both models come with the same Battery Control Unit (BCU), consisting of a gray base and a gray top cover. The HVM series has a maximum height of 2160 mm, while the HVS line is max 1461 mm high.
Both the HVM and HVS have internal wiring, making them user-friendly and easy to install. These batteries can operate both on- and off-the-grid, depending on the battery or hybrid inverter used. Moreover, the HVS/HVM batteries meet the highest safety standards (VDE 251050), have an IP55 rating, and are developed with cobalt-free lithium iron phosphate (LFP), currently the safest technology for home batteries. This LFP technology makes them on average heavier than other storage batteries. They can operate at temperatures down to -10° C. Not all batteries can do that, so this is a significant advantage.
The BYD battery from the HVS series, which stands for High-Voltage Small, has the smallest capacity, as the name suggests. A standard package consists of 2 battery modules with a combined capacity of 5.1 kWh. The HVS is expandable up to a maximum of 5 modules. This achieves a total capacity of 12.8 kWh. Each individual module has a capacity of 2.56 kWh with an internal voltage of 102.4V. Whether you can use a total of 5 modules depends on the battery or hybrid inverter used. You can connect up to 3 battery towers in parallel – so 3 x 5 battery modules – achieving a maximum capacity of 38.4 kWh.
The BYD HVM battery, or High-Voltage Medium, has a higher capacity than the HVS. A basic package consists of 3 battery modules with a combined capacity of 8.3 kWh. This model can be expanded up to a maximum of 8 modules with a combined capacity of 22.1 kWh. Each module has a capacity of 2.76 kWh and an internal voltage of 51.2V.
This model also has a minimum. You must use at least 3 modules for a functioning battery. A maximum of 3 identical systems can be connected in parallel – so 3 x 8 – achieving a maximum capacity of 66.2 kWh.
